Infertility: increasing the factor M. Guilty of oxidative stress?
What's new at the next Congress "Nutraceuticals in Andrology and Urology" (Forlimpopoli, Italy, April 21)
Suffering from infertility - a problem that afflicts 15% of couples - are today more and more males. This is what is learned from recent published studies on the subject, according to which the M factor is responsible, alone, at least 1 in 5 of infertility, to rise in association with the F factor, up to 2-3 of 5 cases.
The causes of this trend, according to Eugenio Luigi Iorio, president of the International Observatory of Oxidative Stress, are to be found not only in a range of known diseases that directly or indirectly affect the procreative function (eg varicocele, narrowing of the tube ), but also to emerging risk factors for health, such as oxidative stress, which finds its fertile ground in lifestyles incongruous and, in particular, environmental pollution as in the broadest sense of the term (assault of contaminants in air, soil and food).
In fact, a correct balance between the production and elimination of free radicals and other reactive chemical species centered on oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, sulfur and halogens (especially chlorine) by antioxidant defense systems, is essential for proper functioning and effectiveness of reproductive processes. For example, the copulation that triggers such physiological processes, allowing access of the male gamete to the female reproductive organs, also depends on good erection. This is a complex phenomenon whose basis is the vasodilatory effect exerted on the corpora cavernosa of the penis from the oxide of nitrogen (nitric oxide, NO), a free radical. The ability to fertilize sperm, then, is inevitably influenced by the quality of the seminal fluid as a whole, largely dependent, in turn, by a suitable antioxidant balance. On the female side, again, an adequate production of reactive oxygen species is required for proper ovulation.
"I hope that the upcoming conference Nutraceuticals in Andrology and Urology [download brochure] - reiterates Iorio - marks an important milestone in the professional training not only of specialists, but also family doctors, called at the forefront in promoting respectful of the lifestyles of the gametes and reproductive health, with a renewed focus on the so-called stronger sex. In this context, any remedial actions such nutraceutical must find their comfort in specific assessments of oxidative balance, both systemic on blood samples, both local sphere of seminal fluid, as required by the Panel Carratelli, already in use in several medical centers for infertility "
